* poll shows support for the war in Afghanistan has reached a new low … LMW: and I agree … We never had any business being there, except to find and destroy bin Laden and al Qaeda. Bush failed to do that, Obama succeeded. Now we should leave.

an AP-GfK poll reports (5/9/12) …

  • Support for the war in Afghanistan has reached a new low, with only 27 percent of Americans saying they back the effort and about half of those who oppose the war saying the continued presence of American troops in Afghanistan is doing more harm than good
  • In results released Wednesday, 66 percent opposed the war, with 40 percent saying they were “strongly” opposed. A year ago, 37 percent favored the war, and in the spring of 2010, support was at 46 percent. Eight percent strongly supported the war in the new poll.
  • President Barack Obama has promised to keep fighting forces in Afghanistan until the end of 2014, despite the declining popular support.
  • Obama acknowledged the rising frustration during a surprise visit to Afghanistan last week. He signed a 10-year security pact with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and congratulated U.S. troops on the anniversary of bin Laden’s death. He told troops that he is ending the war but that more of their friends will die before it is over.
  • As of Tuesday, at least 1,834 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan as a result of the U.S.-led invasion in late 2001, according to an Associated Press count.

LMW COMMENT …

We never had any business being there, except to find and destroy bin Laden and al Qaeda. Bush failed to do that, Obama succeeded. Now we should leave.

We do not know how to build anything in Afghanistan and there is no reason for more people to die.

Extract the military ASAP, and do not retain what will only be a futile long term presence.

Did you hear about bin Laden, the one Bush let escape at Tora Bora, and then took the troops to Iraq for no good reason.

Granted the Commander in Chief ultimately responsible but that does make the current president a great war time tactician. Taking the troops into Iraq may have been a mistake however The democrats stepped right in line and supported it.

But not Obama. His opposition to the Iraq War from the very beginning was a major factor in his primary victory over Hillary Clinton in 2008. Since becoming President, he has moved as rapidly as possible to exit both Iraq and Afghanistan. And he personally made the decision to go after bin Laden.

Presidents are not expected to be war tacticians, but they are supposed to exercise civilian authority over the military and make the policy decisions. Obama has done that very well.

      • Chris said

What votes did he cast while elected to support his anti iraq war position? What is the difference when you replace troops with private contractors?

      • Lew Weinstein said

Obama was not yet in the Senate when the Iraq votes were taken.

Use of contractors means someone is making a profit on war, which adds to the military, industrial, governmental corruption that is and has been a part of every war ever fought.

      • Chris said

So the presidents opposition to the iraq war was just words.
My point is if the troops are replaced with contractors its not a draw down or reduction you just changed uniforms.

What is it exactly that the president did that the previous president did not do? Is the current resident such a superior commander in chief?
