“The question is whether, in the face of an ongoing national crisis,

we can stop the political circus

and actually do something to help the economy.”

.

“The people who sent us here

don’t have the luxury of waiting 14 months

… they need help, and they need it now.”

.

“This plan is the right thing to do right now.

You should pass it right away.

.

“I ask every American who agrees

to tell the people who are gathered here tonight

that you want action now.”

Paul Krugman writes in the NYT (9/8/11)

  • First things first: I was favorably surprised by the new Obama jobs plan, which is significantly bolder and better than I expected.
  • It’s not nearly as bold as the plan I’d want in an ideal world. But if it actually became law, it would probably make a significant dent in unemployment.
  • Of course, it isn’t likely to become law, thanks to G.O.P. opposition. And that is both a tragedy and an outrage.
  • at this point, leading Republicans are basically against anything that might help the unemployed.
  • The good news in all this is that by going bigger and bolder than expected, Mr. Obama may finally have set the stage for a political debate about job creation.
  • For, in the end, nothing will be done until the American people demand action.

David Brooks writes in the NYT (9/8/11) …

  • Thursday night the president gave one of the most forceful and compelling domestic policy speeches of his presidency.
  • His proposals were drawn from the middle of the ideological spectrum and were selected to appeal to people who don’t put a lot of faith in government spending.
  • Republicans have supported most of these ideas at one time or another.
  • I think the president has earned a second date.

LMW COMMENT …

Obama gave more than a brilliant speech. He gave very clear indication that he intends to fight for what he believes the American people need. If Republicans say “NO” which they likely will, he promised to take that message to every corner of America. I bet that if Obama truly fights for what he wants, the Republicans will cave.

  1. I agree on stopping the circus, but re the debt ceiling, your answer is too facile. There was plenty of vagueness there where he could have invoked the 14th Amdt argument. Here’s an article from July 24 New York Times that has views of some of the biggest names in legal academia … http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/25/us/politics/25legal.html

  2. MAUREEN HANAHAN STUART, FLA. said

Short cmment on the debt ceiling increase, since the subject came up..the
President does not have the ability to approve or veto any agreement not
agreed to by both House and Senate..If the President had refused to sign
the legislation sent to him….the blame would have been his ALONE..and in
regards to Health Care Reform issues, etc…I am sure they are not forgotten..
The most important issue today is our economic problem and creating jobs.
As President Obama said….STOP THE POLITICAL CIRCUS AND HELP THE
ECONOMY WITH THE AMERICAN JOBS ACT…

  3. MAUREEN HANAHAN STUART, FLA. said

I HAVE HEARD SO MANY COMMENTS RECENTLY OF FEELINGS OF
DISAPPOINTMENTS IN OUR PRESIDENT…WELL, I AM UPSET WITH THOSE
COMMENTS…PRESIDENT OBAMA IS DOING EVERYTHING IN HIS POWER
TO HELP THE AMERICAN PEOPLE…HIS SPEECH WAS DYNAMIC, AS USUAL,
BUT, WILL THE REPUBLICAN PARTY GO WITH IT? PERHAPS IT IS HIS
FAULT IF AS A LEADER HE CANNOT PERSUADE HIS TROOPS TO FOLLOW
HIS ORDERS….BUT, THER IS QUITE A DISTINCTION BETWEEN INABILITY TO
LEAD AND REFUSING TO BE LED…

    • I won’t repeat all that I’ve written before on this blog, but Obama has REFUSED TO LEAD. (Whether he has an inability to lead, I don’t know.) President Obama could have explained to the American people during the debt ceiling crisis that we were being held hostage by a few extremists, and then not given in to them and used the 14th Amdt argument to raise the ceiling himself. He refused to lead on closing Guantanamo when he had the chance. He refused to prosecute torturers and war criminals. He gave up on public option for healthcare. He hasn’t even FOUGHT to achieve these things. It is pure fantasy to think the Republicans are his problem. He was elected and had a majority and could have accomplished a great deal. Instead, he has, again and again, catered to the radical right wing, who had sworn to make his presidency a failure. He could have used majoritarian politics, the bully pulpit, and executive orders to overcome them.

  4. If he does, and if he starts fighting for other things important to me that he’s failed to fight for, I would support him. If he fights for this, I would probably vote for him as the lesser of two evils. That’s where I’m at with his presidency, unfortunately.

BRIAN … And if Obama does fight for it, will you support him? … LEW

  6. I wouldn’t get too excited over this. I won’t have any faith in his words until he actually fights. He’s said a lot of pleasing things over the past few years that he hasn’t followed through on. This is likely just campaign talk. if he won’t fight on this and ACHIEVE RESULTS, he should step aside for someone who can actually lead.
