FURTHER UPDATES FROM FIRST READ (7/15/11)

*** The GOP cares about low taxes and shrinking government, not the deficit: Yet perhaps the biggest takeaway from McConnell’s proposal is that it exposes Republicans leaders for not acting on the deficit and debt when they had the power to do so, and when they had a Democratic president willing to do things that probably won’t be seen for a generation. When Obama put $4 trillion in deficit reduction on the table (as long as Republicans added revenues to the mix), they walked away. And when they had Democrats tying spending cuts to the debt increase, they ended up punting. Here’s the lesson we’ve all learned: What the GOP cares about is low taxes and shrinking government. The deficit and debt are only means to that end.

*** Obama won the argument? One more point on the McConnell plan: It’s also a concession of sorts that Republicans realize they can’t “win” this stalemate. They only lose badly or lose honorably. The president had painted McConnell and Boehner (especially) into a corner.

from FIRST READ FROM NBC NEWS (Jul 11, 2011) …

Walking away: Six months ago, how many Republicans would have believed: 1) that the Obama White House would have backed a plan to reduce the deficit by $4 trillion over the next 10 years; 2) that the president would agree to link the debt limit to spending cuts; and 3) that Obama would put Medicare and Social Security on the table? The Tea Party and deficit hawks like Jim DeMint would have won the argument when it comes to debt, and they would have achieved something — especially on Medicare and Social Security — they’d probably never get under a Republican president, unless he or she had a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. But Republicans walked away from the deal, because they wouldn’t give up the one thing that Democrats were asking for in return: any increases in tax hikes for the rich.

LMW COMMENT …

President Obama, still the only adult in the room, has offered everything the Republicans could have asked for. Obama has risked alienating his own left-wing base by (properly, in my view) putting Medicare and Social Security reform on the table. He has insisted, however, that the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy need to be eliminated. The Republicans, dominated by their idiotic “know-nothing” Tea Party pledge to never raise taxes, have walked away from the table. They will risk fiscal chaos and economic disaster to protect unwarranted tax cuts for millionaires.

Obama must not compromise further. And he must push the Republicans’ faces deeply into the muck their own twisted ideology has created for them. The Republicans must be made to take the blame for failing to compromise and for the chaos that will result.

Boehner knows better, but he is no longer in charge of the morons who have stolen the Republican party… people like Michelle Bachman who says blacks were better under slavery and Sarah Palin who says the debt limit should not be raised.

The only way out of this deadlock is to elect an overwhelming Democratic House and Senate, along with re-electing President Obama in 2012, and if the Republicans continue as they are going, that is exactly what might happen.

It is beyond my comprehension how any thinking person can continue to support this Republican party.
