* Can the bishops be trusted? Of course not. On matters dealing with sexual abuse of children by priests, they’ve been trained to lie. Only when the enablers of pedophile priests are put behind bars will there be real hope of eliminating this disgusting blot on the Church. *** UPDATE *** Pope John Paul should be one of those held accountable and the full story of his failure to deal with pedophile priests should be known before he is ever made a saint. It is too late to bring criminal charges against him. Denial of sainthood, however, is still possible. That message would be dramatic.

  • Pope John Paul II’s beatification is taking place despite continued outrage about the clerical abuse scandal.
  • Many of the crimes and cover-ups of priests who raped children occurred on John Paul’s 27-year watch.
  • Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins, the retired head of the Vatican’s saint-making office who presided over the investigation into John Paul’s life for the beatification, said Saturday the pope couldn’t be held responsible for something he didn’t know about.
  • “The investigation took all this into account, they discussed it a lot,” he said. “But you cannot say he was informed of everything.”
  • “If I’m not informed of something, what guilt do I have?” he asked rhetorically. “This didn’t touch at all the holiness of John Paul.”

I do not find it credible that Pope John Paul was unaware of the pedophile behavior in the Catholic Church. And if he wasn’t, it could only be by purposely avoiding knowing. The Church has done nothing but lie about this since the issue arose.

Pope John Paul II did many wonderful things during his tenure. Enabling and covering up for pedophile priests was not one of them. It is too late to bring criminal charges against him. Denial of sainthood, however, is still possible.

these two popes have enabled pedophile priests to terrorize children ... Pope Ratzinger still does ... and John Paul II was no saint

Anne M. Burke writes in the Chicago Tribune (4/29/11) …

  •  Just when it appeared that the fallout over the abuse scandal in the U.S. Catholic Church could not get any worse, another shoe dropped in Philadelphia.
  • On Feb. 10, 2011 three veteran priests of the archdiocese of Philadelphia were charged with rape and indecent assault, accused of the abuse of minors dating back to the 1990s. Monsignor William Lynn, who served as the archdiocese’s point person for investigating reports of clerical sexual abuse from 1992 to 2004, was charged with child endangerment for allegedly covering up abuse by priests.
  • The district attorney’s office in Philadelphia says there was “a pattern of the church looking the other way when it came to investigating these charges.”
  • The indicted monsignor is accused of turning a blind eye to things in his chancery office. Of course, to blame a clerical official, and not his archbishop, of such deviousness presents a mistaken analysis of how the church works.
  • This makes me wonder what kind of people we are dealing with when we engage the bishops.
  • Are they ever to be trusted?
  • What is really sad is that the Vatican’s understanding of what people really need is so totally off the mark.
  • I believe that the virtue of truthfulness has been in trouble for a long time in the Catholic Church. Who could ever see this coming? Not me. I was an obedient Catholic schoolgirl, a true believer. It is not easy for us to unlearn being Catholic. I, for one, don’t want to.
  • I believe that when the truth flourishes we will see the return of those who have walked away from the church. We will see people choose holy orders as a way of life for the service of others.

Anne M. Burke is a justice on the Illinois Supreme Court and former interim chairwoman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops National Review Board.

Can the bishops be trusted? Of course not. They’ve been trained to lie.

They have cared not one whit about the children’s lives ruined by priestly sexual abuse, as long as the pedophile priests and the Church itself was not injured in any way.

This will only change when the bishops, cardinals and the Pope himself are held accountable for their criminal acts in an appropriate court of law.

Only when the enablers of pedophile priests are put behind bars will there be real hope of eliminating this disgusting blot on the Church.
