* keeping assault weapons from deranged shooters does not seem to be even a discussable issue with NRA fanatics … what the NRA is saying is that it is wrong to try to prevent assault weapon murders and that the only acceptable gun policy is to arrest the criminals after they have killed innocent people

Only 28 percent of those polled by CNN/Opinion Research last week

said the shootings made it more likely they would back stricter gun laws –

although more than half of those surveyed

admitted that purchase laws played some role in the incident.

Glenn Thrush writes for Politico (1/20/11) …

  • President Obama has supported most major gun and ammunition control initiatives during a decade and a half in public life, including renewing the expired ban on semi-automatic assault rifles. But while he has an unambiguously liberal record on guns, he talks about the issue using muted, non-confrontational tones engineered to avoid alienating gun-friendly voters, a huge proportion of the electorate that has steadily drifted away from Obama.
  • New York Democratic Rep. Tim Bishop, one of 42 House members to co-sponsor a bill limiting clip sizes to ten rounds, said “it obviously would be helpful” if Obama offered more explicit support.
  • “We’re not even talking about gun control here, we’re talking about limiting these crazy high-capacity clips,” Bishop added. “I don’t see how any reasonable person can oppose what we’re trying to do here.”
  • The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y) – who lost her husband in a 1993 mass shooting on a Long Island Rail Road commuter train, says it’s time for Obama to “step up” and back her measure.
  • Gun rights advocates, for their part, see the move as another attempt to infringe on their Second Amendment rights – and predict the bill would garner only about half the votes needed to pass the House.

LMW COMMENT …

Reasoned discussion with 2nd Amendment fanatics seems impossible. There is only one position that seems acceptable to such people: ALL GUNS FOR ALL PEOPLE.

To someone like me who supports the right of gun ownership, but believes that responsible use of guns is a subject for regulation, the NRA position seems insane.

What the NRA is saying is that it is wrong to try to prevent assault weapon murders and that the only acceptable gun policy is to arrest the criminals after they have killed innocent people.

According to the Brady Campaign to prevent gun violence..about
85 percent of disqualifying mental health records are not in the
background check data base..we must decide that allowing anyone
to carry a concealed weapon is just crazy and demand that laws
designed to keep guns out of the hands of lunatics be enforced..
the next senseless massacre might be prevented…
