* Dr. William Oddie (Catholic Herald) says the Catholic Church has less child abuse than others … even if true, this is a pitifully weak and reprehensible defense! The Catholic Church is unique in its history of enabling sexual abuse by its priests and preventing the criminal prosecution which should ensue from such abuse.

Dr. William Oddie (Catholic Herald) writes …

  • the Catholic Church is NOT an endemically paedophile organisation
  • According to Dr Thomas Plante of Stanford University and Santa Clara University, “available research suggests that approximately two to five per cent of priests have had a sexual experience with a minor” which “is lower than the general adult male population” – in which the percentage of those who have interfered with minors “is best estimated to be closer to eight per cent”.
  • the state school system in the US has a considerably higher rate of sexual abuse than the Catholic Church: according to a report prepared for the US Department of Education entitled Educator Sexual Misconduct: A Synthesis of Existing Literature, “9.6 per cent of all students in grades 8 to 11 report… educator sexual misconduct that was unwanted.”
  • This is a problem we share with everyone, though actually we are less guilty of it than society as a whole and are doing a lot better in acknowledging such child abuse as does exist.

Dr William Oddie is a leading English Catholic writer and broadcaster. He edited The Catholic Herald from 1998 to 2004 and is the author of The Roman Option and Chesterton and the Romance of Orthodoxy.

LMW COMMENT …

What a strange defense of disgusting behavior and criminal complicity in covering up that behavior. Even if the numbers cited by Dr. Oddie are true, do the public schools or any other organization whose members are sexual abusers of children …

  • have an organizational policy imperative NOT TO REPORT such behavior to the police,
  • to TRANSFER ITS KNOWN ABUSERS to other locations where they can continue to abuse,
  • and to systematically THREATEN THE ABUSED so that they consider full disclosure of the abuse an attack on the church rather than an attack on themselves?

I find Dr. Oddie’s position as reprehensible as that of the bishops, cardinals and popes who should be behind bars.

The Catholic Church is unique in its history of enabling sexual abuse by its priests and preventing the criminal prosecution which should ensue from such abuse.
