POLITICAL observations & opinions

* Roger Simon’s message to Congressional Democrats … You actually have a record of accomplishment to run on … to which I would add … If you can’t convince the voters that real progress is worth something, you don’t deserve to be returned to Congress. Stop whining and go campaign.

Politico's Roger Simon

Roger Simon writes for Politico (7/14/10) …

  • Who would have thought just a matter of months ago that the Republicans would be the party of enthusiasm? The Republicans were the party of tired old white men who had just been thrashed by the magnetic and mesmerizing Obama, whose words flowed like silver from his lips.
  • Then, a terrible thing happened: Obama began to do things.
    • He saved the economy from disaster.
    • He provided new medical coverage for children.
    • He passed historic health care reform for the entire nation.
  • But who turned on him? Liberal Democrats.
    • Eric Alterman, a liberal author and columnist for The Nation, wrote recently: “Few progressives would take issue with the argument that, significant accomplishments notwithstanding, the Obama presidency has been a big disappointment.”
  • I had trouble grappling with the phrase “significant accomplishments notwithstanding.”
  • If you toss significant accomplishments out the window, how would FDR or Abraham Lincoln or George Washington do by that standard?
  • Aren’t significant accomplishments what presidents are supposed to accomplish? And isn’t it more than a little unfair to toss those accomplishments aside and then judge those presidents?

Roger Simon is POLITICO’s chief political columnist.

LMW COMMENT …

Way to go Roger! That’s exactly the voice we need.

Our Democrats in Congress, quaking before the Bush Republicans for two years when they had a majority, terrified to let Senate Republicans make fools of themselves by actually carrying out a filibuster instead of getting what they want by just threatening one, and surely unable to conceive and pass significant legislation without the leadership and prodding of a president who is better than we deserve, do not have my sympathy.

Congressional candidates actually have a record of accomplishment to run on. If they can’t convince the voters that real progress is worth something, they don’t deserve to be returned to Congress.

Stop whining and go campaign.
