* with $20 billion, Obama turns the tide in the BP oil debate

Obama & BP execs

Well, it wasn’t too late and he did it.

The speech from the Oval Office, the $20 billion initial commitment from BP, and the Republican idiot Congressman from Texas have turned the situation to where it should have been all along.

Obama didn’t create this situation.

The Republican under-regulation philosophy, begun by Ronald Reagan and blossoming under oil guys Bush and Cheney, led to horrendous and culpable irresponsibility by BP (and likely the other oil companies as well). Same cause as the mortgage and investment crises which preceded it.

Obama’s speech laid out the problems and the steps to solution … stopping the oil flow, taking care of the damaged people and environment, assessing how it happened so we can avoid it happening again, and a bold broad-based approach to find non-oil energy solutions.

Obama was criticized for not being more aggressive in that speech. But the critics, including the MSNBC crowd of Chris Mathews, Keith Olberman, Gene Robinson and Rachel Maddow, are all people who don’t seem to have a clue how complicated it is to manage effectively in a huge political bureaucratic morass filled with enemies, and who in all likelihood couldn’t do 1% as well as the man they’re criticizing.

I think it’s also worth noting that some of the criticism comes from people who will oppose whatever Obama does. It seems to me a lot of those critics seem to be racists who just can’t stand the idea of a black man in the White House, especially when he succeeds.
