* only the faithful can return the Catholic Church to the position of moral credibility it has so profoundly forfeited … don’t go to church … don’t contribute … protest in every diocese

Reported by the New York Times …

  • Some German dioceses recently have reported steep increases in the number of people leaving the church.
  • Zollitsch’s Freiburg archdiocese said 2,711 left the church in the southwestern region in March — compared with 1,058 a year earlier.
  • The Wuerzburg diocese in Bavaria said 1,233 left the church there in March — three times the 407 recorded a year earlier.
  • The Munich archdiocese, where Benedict once served as archbishop, said it did not yet have figures for March.

LMW COMMENT …

The only people who can reform the Catholic Church are Catholics. Not the pope and bishops who have failed so miserably to live up to their responsibilities and who have shielded pedophile priests while allowing Catholic children to be raped and abused.  The agents of change must be ordinary everyday practicing Catholics. And the means of effecting change must be to stop going to church,  to stop contributing to the Church, and to mount protests in every diocese worldwide. One Sunday of such actions would start a process which might restore the Catholic Church to the position of moral credibility it has so profoundly forfeited.

I don’t feel as though advising people not to go to Church
or contribute is the answer…There are plenty not going as
it is and as far as contributions…My parish gives at least
200 meals to the poor every week…no questions asked…they
help the needy to pay their mortgages….not to mention
salaries for all the lay teachers….we also have a shelter
for unwed Mothers that was opened with parish contributions.
Relief funds to Haiti…etc…The Catholic Church needs time,
healing and faith right now….Maureen Hanahan, Stuart, Fla.

I have said before (on this blog) that another group which is hurt very much by the bad priests are those who are wonderful and good. The problem is that, until the Church comes clean and confidence is restored, it is hard to sort out the good from the bad. It is the responsibility of the bishops, cardinals and the pope to do this work and restore the moral credibility of the Church. So far, most of them are failing to do so.

I am a member of the Catholic Church and hurt and embarrassed
regarding the scandal throughout my Church. I believe, through
life, for every bad or horribe incident, good will follow. In
time, we will hopefully see more of lay people, Deacons and
the community more involved in leadership.
I think, for all the negativity put forth, their should be some
input on the many many wonderful clergy that have dedicated
their lives. I personally know many and will continue to give
them respect…Change is coming…for the good of the Church.
I will never stop going to my Chrch because of the fault or sins
    of another human being….
