adding Bishop Pican and Cardinal Hojos to the shameful gallery of enablers

Tom Heneghan, Rueters Religion Editor writes (4/15/10) …

  • A Vatican cardinal in charge of clergy around the world congratulated a French bishop in a 2001 letter for not denouncing a sexually abusive priest to the police, according to a French website on Thursday.
  • In the letter dated Sept 8, 2001, Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos backed French Bishop Pierre Pican’s decision not to denounce a priest who was later sentenced to 18 years in jail for repeated rape of a boy and sexual assaults on 10 others.
  • the Vatican has insisted the fact that other published documents did not explicitly instruct bishops to inform police of abuse did not prove it told them to hide it.
  • Pican, who received a suspended three-month jail sentence for not denouncing sexual abuse of minors, admitted in court he had kept Rev. Rene Bissey in parish work despite the fact the priest had privately admitted committing pedophile acts.
  • “I congratulate you for not denouncing a priest to the civil administration,” Castrillon Hoyos said. “You have acted well and I am pleased to have a colleague in the episcopate who, in the eyes of history and of all other bishops in the world, preferred prison to denouncing his son and priest.”

  1. Being the eternal optimist, I am hoping that something good will come out of this on-going horrific situation. But what? First has to be installing safety steps that would not allow this behavior to continue. The problem is how as it would be like the inmates running the asylum. With its protective status in many countries, the catholic shurch has managed to keep local authorities at bay and in the dark, and got away with … (you fill the blank). That has got to change! While many of us want to see blame and punishment, it has to surve a purpose beyond simple revenge. It has to bring awarness, and hopefully fear into potential purpetrators, to contain this problem. I say contain because like many problems with our society and others past, pedophalia exist in many places albeit handled differently by many governament. So besides believing that pedophalia is a horrible act which should be met with the most severe measures (including castration), I strongly feel that the clergy should be treated and prosecuted like anybody else.

Historically, catholic priests, like those of other christian faiths, were allowed to marry until not that long ago. The rule was changed to avoid heirs so that the church would get all the possession of the priests and get richer which it obviously did.. Finally, I think that if the catholic church allowed its priest to marry, have families, be gay, be women, then things may move in the right direction. On the other hand the catholic church has moved systematically backward for the last thirty some years so my hopes are not high. Jean-Paul the first was planning a reform but somehow mysteriously died two months into his call. How about a novel on that one Lew?
