* Vatican priest sees criticism of the Church’s enabling of sexual abuse of children by priests as akin to persecution of Jews … the Church as victim? how ludicrous is that?

UPDATE from the Vatican …

  • Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi  is officially distancing itself from Good Friday remarks by the papal preacher, who likened accusations against the pope in the clergy sex abuse cover-up scandals to collective violence against Jews.
  • Lombardi contacted The Associated Press in Rometo to say such parallelism can lead to misunderstandings.
  • He said Father Raniero Cantalamessa’s remarks in a homily at a service presided over by Pope Benedict XVI in St. Peter’s Basilica is not the official position of the church.
  • Amid criticism from Jewish leaders and abuse victims’ groups, Lombardi said Cantalamessa was not speaking as a Vatican official.

LMW COMMENT …

Nice try, but backing away like that is not quite believable. Joseph Ratzinger (aka Pope Benedict XVI) has repeatedly stated the goal of the Church to convert all Jews to Jesus Christ; he has re-instituted the prayer to that effect which was deleted from the liturgy by Vatican II, showing very little willingness to extend the spirit of tolerance his predecessors exuded. I would suspect that the long-time Vatican preacher who spoke on Good Friday knew well his boss’s feelings and reflected them accurately in his remarks. Other Vatican spokesmen have said the New York Times’ criticism of the Church’s tolerance for sexually abusing priests is the result of Jewish influence in the U.S. media. These men will blame anyone but themselves, and they will not change unless millions of Catholics force them to.

Daniel Wakin and Rachel Donadio write in the NYT …

  • A senior Vatican priest speaking at a Good Friday service compared the uproar over sexual abuse scandals in the Catholic Church — which have included reports about Pope Benedict XVI’s oversight role in two cases — to the persecution of the Jews, sharply raising the volume in the Vatican’s counterattack.
  • The remarks underscored how much the Catholic Church has felt under attack from recent news reports and criticism over how it has handled charges of child molestation against priests in the past, and sought to focus attention on the church as the central victim.
  • The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi said it was incorrect to interpret the remarks as comparing recent criticism of the Catholic Church to anti-Semitism.
  • A leading advocate for sex abuse victims in the United States, David Clohessy, called comparing criticism of the church to persecution of the Jews “breathtakingly callous and misguided.”
  • “Men who deliberately and consistently hide child sex crime are in no way victims,” he said. “And to conflate public scrutiny with horrific violence is about as wrong as wrong can be.”

LMW COMMENT …

The Church as victim? I don’t think so! These priests are simply unwilling to accept responsibility for the horrific acts of the colleagues and the cover-up for decades by uncounted monsignors, bishops, cardinals and Popes. I feel sorry, though, for the many good priests whose reputations are sullied by their association with those who are so evil; until the Church comes clean, there is no way to tell which is which.

Is this the borgias? No. Is this even worst? .YEAH!! History repeating iitself. Sexual abuse has always been in the church since like forever…and if the Pope is helping the priests who committed these crimes then he too should be question. In reality he is an accessory,to the crimes.
blind to see that, He is corrupted too or to much of a coward. WE ARE THE CHURCH!!!, NOT THE POPE. ALL THE POPE IS….JUST LIVING IN THE
WEALTH OF CHURCH AND IS TAKING FROM THE PEOPLE…IS THERE A POPE WITH NO SINS? NO! i BELIEVE IN THE LORD NOT THE POPE OR THE VATICAN. CLEAN UP THE CHURCH AND FIRE THE POPE AND THESE PRIESTS WHO SINNED AND ABUSED THESE PRECIOUS INNOCENT CHILDREN. have them pay for there crimes.
