* AP: Palin clothes illegal? may violate Federal Election Campaign Act

Posted by Lew Weinstein on October 24, 2008

AP reports …

  • Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics, a private watchdog group in Washington, filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission against Palin, the Republican National Committee and several political operatives alleging that the purchase of clothing for Palin and her family violates Federal Election Campaign Act.
  • The law prohibits a candidate for federal office from converting campaign funds to personal use. CREW notes that FEC regulations make clear the prohibition applies to clothing
  • Sarah Palin is blaming gender bias for the controversy over $150,000 worth of designer clothes, hairstyling and accessories the Republican Party provided for her, a newspaper reported Thursday.
  • Palin said the clothes were not worth $150,000 and were bought for the Republican National Convention.
  • Most of the clothes have never left the campaign plane, she told the newspaper.

Palin says the clothes are still on the campaign plane. But we’ve all seen her wearing those clothes. Sarah Palin wouldn’t know the truth if it bit her.

A lot of Republicans are criticizing the use of campaign funds to but clothes for Palin, including those running for Congress and other offices, whose campaigns are strapped for cash. John McCain, making more “friends” every day.

McCain started his “Joe the Plumber Tour” in Florida yesterday.
He was asked about the Republican Committee spending $150,000
on clothes and hairstyling for Sarah Palin and family..McCain’s
reply in an interview with Palm Beach Post: “She needed the
    clothes at the time.”
I wonder how “Joe the Plumber” feels about $150,000 to dress
up Palin, since it was released, Joe’s home is worth $23,000
    LESS than that….Maureen Hanahan..Stuart, Fla.

I’d rather have a candidate buy a wardrobe rather than votes. Learn the Obama ABC’s http://www.aquapasture.com/politics/abcs
