* Lew: John McCain didn’t vet Joe the plumber any better than he vetted Sarah the governor

Posted by Lew Weinstein on October 17, 2008

AP’s John Seewer writes (thanks to ILENE for the article) …

  • At the debate, McCain cited Wurzelbacher as an example of someone who wants to buy a plumbing business but would be hurt by Obama’s tax plans.
  • Wurzelbacher, a self-described conservative, had spoken to Obama at a rally Sunday near his home and asked him whether his tax plan would keep him from buying the business that currently employs him, which earns more than $250,000 a year.
  • “Your new tax plan is going to tax me more, isn’t it?” Wurzelbacher asked.
  • Obama said that under his proposal taxes on any revenue from $250,000 on down would stay the same, but that amounts above that level would be subject to a 39 percent tax, instead of the current 36 percent rate.
  • McCain said Obama’s plan would stop entrepreneurs such as Wurzelbacher from investing in new small businesses and keep existing ones from growing.
  • The McCain campaign posted a Web ad featuring the exchange between Wurzelbacher and Obama.

  • The way John McCain raised the Joe the plumber issue is a reflection on McCain’s own lack of intellectual command and his honesty. It is yet another indication that he doesn’t have the mental capabilities needed to be an effective president.
  • McCain quotes Joe as saying he couldn’t afford to buy the business if his taxes on income over $250,000 increased by 3%, from 36% to 39%.
  • Let’s say Joe’s income went from $250,000 to $350,000, a healthy increase. The additional taxes on the $100,000 increase in income would be $3,000. How could such a small amount keep Joe from buying the business?
  • NOTE: We’re talking income here, not revenues. If the business nets $350,000 in income, then revenues are probably at least $3.5 million. $3,000 additional taxes in a $3.5 million business is going to kill it? Please!
  • Beyond that is the fact that Joe the plumber is not licensed, and apparently doesn’t pay taxes anyway, since  court documents show he owes nearly $1,200 in back taxes.
  • It turns out that John McCain didn’t vet Joe the plumber any better than he vetted Sarah the governor.
  • and that Joe the plumber is not any smarter than John McCain.
