* Hillary Clinton and Cecile Richards: Bush proposal allows healthcare providers to refuse abortions and contraception

Posted by Lew Weinstein on September 19, 2008

Hillary Clinton and Cecile Richards write in today’s NYT …

  • the Bush administration launched the latest salvo in its eight-year campaign to undermine women’s rights and women’s health by placing ideology ahead of science: a proposed rule from the Department of Health and Human Services that would govern family planning.
  • The rule would require any health care entity that receives federal financing — whether it’s a physician in private practice, a hospital or a state government — certify in writing that none of its employees are required to assist in any way with medical services they find objectionable.
  • The definition of abortion in the proposed rule is left open to interpretation … because the current version includes no definition at all, individual health care providers could decide on their own that birth control is the same as abortion.
  • The 30-day comment period on the proposed rule runs until Sept. 25. Everyone who believes that women should have full access to medical care should make their voices heard. Basic, quality care for millions of women is at stake.

LMW COMMENT:

John McCain’s position on women’s issues is as bad as that of George W. Bush. Sarah Palin’s is even worse.

Yet Newsweek reports that a “significant proportion of women wrongly believe McCain has a pro-choice record.”

  • McCain actually opposes abortion except in cases of rape, incest, or threat to the woman’s life.
  • Palin’s only exception is the life of the mother. Rape or incest? No choice. Have the baby.

McCain and Palin both believes Roe v Wade should be overturned, and if McCain is elected, he will appoint Supreme Court hustices who will do just that.

Obama has begun running ads that clearly distinguish his support for women’s issues, including pro-choice and birth control, from those of his opponents.

It is difficult for me to understand how any pro-choice man or woman could possibly vote for McCain-Palin.

Cecile Richards is the president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. If I have to tell you who Hillary Clinton is you’re on the wrong blog.
